Message-ID: Hi Just a quick note to say that ARMedslack now runs on the Marvell Sheevaplug http://www.marvell.com/products/embedded_processors/developer/kirkwood/sheevaplug.jsp I've added a U-Boot tools package to ARMedslack in the 'a' series so that Kernels can be built locally. Now we need to wait for the Linux 2.6.30 Kernel to be released (since that is the first kernel.org version that includes the Kirkwood CPU support), and then figure out what changes need to be made to the Slackware installer. I will delay the release of ARMedslack 12.2 until I've got the installer, since I really want to target real ARM hardware rather than just emulation. -- Stuart Winter www.slackware.com/~mozes Slackware for ARM: www.armedslack.org From mozes at slackware.com Thu May 14 20:48:22 2009 From: mozes at slackware.com (Stuart Winter) Date: Thu, 14 May 2009 13:48:22 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [armedslack] Anybody with a SheevaPlug Message-ID: Hi I've noticed many new subscriptions to the list -- welcome! I don't think they sell the SheevaPlug with a European (Belgian) power connector, so I didn't get me one. I am waiting on my EBV BeagleBoard to arrive, as soon as I have it, I'm going to try ArmedSlack on it. The power connector is detachable - so you simply pull off the US power plug and reveal the standard figure-of-8 connector. /me continues beating the kirkwood initrd until it works. -- Stuart Winter www.armedslack.org From mallonm at gmail.com Fri May 15 20:08:23 2009 From: mallonm at gmail.com (Michael Mallon) Date: Fri, 15 May 2009 16:08:23 -0400 Subject: [armedslack] Anybody with a SheevaPlug In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <4A0DCBB7.1000406@gmail.com> Stuart Winter wrote: > Hi > > I've noticed many new subscriptions to the list -- welcome! > > I've almost finished preparing a Linux 2.6.30-rc5 Kernel, installer > and documentation to get Slackware ARM running on the SheevaPlug. > > Has anybody on here got a SheevaPlug yet? > I'm keen for people to test on the SheevaPlug! > > I've got mine. I have debian installed on it right now and was able to cross compile Linux 2.6.30-rc5 and boot debian with it from a usb drive. I've tried using this kernel to boot the installer initrd that came with armedslack but no luck. I tried booting into debian and doing a piviot_root onto a disk with armedslack installed (just extracted really) but no luck there either. I need a kernel that will boot on the sheevaplug and is happy with the armedslack binaries. Since the sheevaplug doesn't seem to define its architecture by default you seem to need something like: setenv arcNumber 2097 setenv mainlineLinux yes or a uboot bootargs entry that has the info in it. (DB88FXX81) If I'm going to progress I'll need a kernel and the arguments to boot it with on the sheevaplug. Where might I find this? Any hints? Or is there any information on how to modify slackbuild scripts to work with the cross-compiler so I can make armv5 EABI slackware packages that will work with the kernels I already have? I can work with debian but I prefer slackware if I can get it. Michael. From karlanmitchell at gmail.com Fri May 15 20:20:26 2009 From: karlanmitchell at gmail.com (Karlan T. I've been using slackware for almost 10 years now and won't using any distribution other except maybe Linux from scratch with a BSD style init script and slackware's remove/install/makepkg ;) Now my reason for switching to ARM (i still haven't switched yet) is I am creating a simple touchscreen device for a specific market; and while building a gnu/linux system from source isn't as bad as it sounds, its still kinda a pain; and even harder to maintain. So I stumbled upon this distro and decided it would be much better for me to just base it off ARMedslack, so I could submit patches back into my favorite operating system! Something slightly irrelevant to this list is what touchscreen devices would this community recommend for under $200(w/ WiFi); Basically devices for OEM sale, or just cheap because it comes with no software. The device doesn't need to be that powerful and even if its a ARM chip not supported by this project Id be glad to port it (considering kernel/gcc ect already supports). The current Slackware ARM installer only has modules for the ARM Versatile platform (the name of an ARM dev board - but we only support it through QEMU). I've got a working Kernel *and* installer for the kirkwood series. I've patched a number of packages to detect the SheevaPlug and do the right thing, too. The only thing I haven't got right now is a working generic initrd to boot the installed OS - I can't get the usb/scsi modules to detect my USB hard disk. It works in the installer, but I just can't work out why it's not working in the OS' initrd; but now Jim Hawkins is going to look at it and he can fix it faster than I can ;-) I've also written a pretty extensive installation document for installing onto the SheevaPlug. I'll upload the updates once I've got that fixed which will hopefully be tomorrow if not tonight. -- Stuart Winter www.armedslack.org From djdas at djdas.net Fri May 15 20:33:29 2009 From: djdas at djdas.net (Dario) Date: Fri, 15 May 2009 22:33:29 +0200 Subject: [armedslack] Openmoko Freerunner compatibility? Message-ID: <4A0DD199.3010706@djdas.net> Hi all, I'm a very big Slackware fan since 1998 about ;) and use it as only distro in my desktop PC. Last year as a big fan of Linux and Open Source in general, I bought a Neo Freerunner from Openmoko, I'm very glad to own this device but all the distros (except Android) are based upon Debian and I don't like it so much :P I knew about this project from a post in the official Openmoko community list but I didn't see any note in your site about its compatibility with the Freerunner (though the platform seems quite similar to Sheevaplug). Even in the wiki there is a page that says it supports the Freerunner. As I'm very interested in running my preferred distro on the Freerunner, can someone point me to some info about compatibility/installation/notices (well....Slack is very easy "for us" :P to install, I mention kernels and main libraries binary compatibilities obviously ;) ) and so on? For what in my knowledge I could do tests and debug if needed ;) Thank you very much in advance, nice job :) Bye! Even in > the wiki there is a page that says it supports the Freerunner. I saw a mention of this on a thread I started on linuxquestions.org; I don't remember exactly what the Openmoko folks meant. Certainly if you build an 'old ABI' Kernel with support for the Openmoko, then you should be able to get ARMedslack running on the device. I don't have such a device, so I don't know how much additional work it would be. I've spent the last week all evening, getting the support for the SheevaPlug into the Slackware ARM packages, and updating the Kernel build scripts to support >1 architecture, and patching bits into the installer and writing an installation doc; it's not particularly hard if all of the documentation is to hand, but it does take a lot of time to put together something of distributable quality. I said on the LQ thread that if somebody wants to work on making support for the Freerunner work out of the box on ARMedslack, and maintain that work, then I'm willing to merge in the changes. To bootstrap ARMedslack onto the SheevaPlug what I did was to take an existing installation of ARMedslack in QEMU and copy it onto a USB flash disk. Then I built a modular Kernel with Kirkwood support; built an initial RAM disk containing the modules I thought I'd need; read the documentation about how to boot into the OS. It was actually pretty easy -- just as I said, making something *distributable* was the time consumer. I've got a document detailing how I did some of the QEMU stuff which will appear in ftp://ftp.armedslack.org/armedslack/armedslack-devtools/sheevaplug/ when I upload the updates tomorrow. I don't know anything about the Freerunner yet, but I'd guess that my SheevaPlug installation document might be a good base to begin from... once it's uploaded :-) > knowledge I could do tests and debug if needed ;) > Thank you very much in advance, nice job :) Thanks for the support! -- Stuart Winter www.armedslack.org From mozes at slackware.com Sun May 17 15:23:47 2009 From: mozes at slackware.com (Stuart Winter) Date: Sun, 17 May 2009 08:23:47 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [armedslack] SheevaPlug support available now! I work for Sony Ericsson in a project emulating hardware like the QEMU. I am running Slackware in x86 hardware for years and now it is time to run it on an ARM machine, but I have little background in doing this. I have bought a Neo FreeRunner and want to run ARMedslack on it. Does anyone have some idea on the first steps I have to go into? Thanks for any help.
