I'm also new to Raspberry Pi and Slackware and really like this combination.
It works great. In addition to your links I followed the instructions on

After the firmware/kernel upgrade via rpi-update loader.bin is no longer
required and the memory limit is gone.
Usually I'm using a serial console but for HMDI output my config is:

/boot/cmdline.txt
console=tty1 root=/dev/mmcblk0p3 rootfstype=ext4 rootwait ro
(p3 for the 3rd partition)

/boot/config.txt
gpu_mem=16
